ENDOMETRIOSIS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN: Impact on Daily Life

Endometriosis impacts nearly every aspect of a woman’s life, from education and social activities to mental health and the stigma surrounding the condition. It is not stigmatized as a disease itself, but rather for its symptoms – such as excruciating menstrual pain and chronic pelvic pain – that are often so severe, it is difficult for a healthy individual to comprehend how deeply they can shape someone’s life.

Some individuals experience such intense pain during their periods that they are unable to attend work or school. This, combined with ongoing pelvic pain, can significantly decrease productivity and disrupt daily life. Painful bowel movements and/or urination may also occur. However, the effects of endometriosis go beyond the individual. Because of pain during sexual intercourse, some may begin to avoid intimacy with their partner, which can place considerable strain on the relationship. Infertility and difficulty conceiving are also common, adding further emotional stress and impacting both the relationship and the individual’s mental health.

We still live in a world where having children is often seen as an expected milestone in a relationship. When someone is unable to conceive – despite wanting to – it can lead to intrusive questions from family members or colleagues who may not understand the situation.

Another significant aspect is the financial burden and stress caused by fertility treatments or mental health support, such as therapy, which may be necessary not only for the person living with endometriosis but also for their partner. Women may experience feelings of helplessness, anxiety, and depression, while their partners may struggle with the emotional toll of being unable to alleviate their loved one’s suffering.
